Photo Equipment

ukphotoguy-darkroomAll art requires equipment of some sort and photography is no different. Where painters have paint and brushes, photographers have cameras and lenses. Well that is how it was, now we need to add computers and software to the list of equipment modern photographers need.

We have invested heavily in equipment. We are a Canon camera supporter using their professional series of digital cameras and lens. Out prime camera is the Canon 5D digital SLR, with a Canon 20D digital SLR for backup. We have kept our old Canon EOS 35m film SLR but never seem to need it.We also have a fully functional Darkroom for custom film processing.

The most important part of capturing an image is the lens. Our prime lens is the Canon EF 24-105 L IS, this is a modern zoom lens covering the most popular range used for general photography and portraiture. It is an image stabilized system so reducing the need for a tripod. It is also a fast lens which helps when working in low light. For commercial pictures, particularly architecture or large machinery we have a wide angle Canon 16-35L which is generally regarded as one of the best for a full-frame, wide field of view, low light lens. For sports and outdoor portrait work we have a Canon EF 70-200 L IS telephoto lens which has great clarity and low light performance. Occationaly if we need a really long lens we add the EF 2x extender which makes a 400mm lens capable of taking great pictures. This equipment covers the majority of assignments we undertake but for high quality fine art photography we use another solution.

To produce our breathtaking Black and White large posters we use a traditional film medium format Bronica SQAi camera. This is a classic camera which when combined with the 80mm fixed lens produces superb pictures. When using this equipment we return to the traditional roots which made photography an art.

Light is a major factor when taking pictures, the light not only sets the mood and texture of the image it is a necessary component affecting how the picture is taken. Often in order to get sufficient light for a noise free picture or to remove harsh shadows the cost effective solution is a flash. We use the Canon Speedlight 580EX portable flash units. These are computer controlled and can synchronize to each other to help ensure the perfect exposure or effect. We also reduce shadows with the LumiQuest bouncer.
